If you’ve had your Android phone for more than a year, you’ve probably noticed that it doesn’t feel quite as snappy as it did out of the box. Apps take an extra second to load, and swiping between screens feels like wading through heavy traffic.
Before you assume your hardware is obsolete and start shopping for an expensive upgrade, you need to check your animation scales.
The 0.5x speed hack
Smartphone manufacturers use artificial animations (like apps fading in or sliding across the screen) to make the operating system look smooth. However, these animations take time. By default, they are set to 1x speed.
You can force your phone to cut these animation times in half, making the device feel incredibly responsive. But because different brands hide this menu in different places, here is how to find it on any device:
- Go to Settings > About Phone.
- Unlocking the menu:
- Standard Android (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola): Find the Build Number and tap it 7 times rapidly.
- Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco (MIUI/HyperOS): Find the MIUI Version (or OS Version) and tap it 7 times rapidly.
- A message will flash saying, “You are now a developer!”
- Go back to your main Settings menu. Search for Developer Options (usually located under “System” or “Additional Settings”).
- Scroll down to the “Drawing” section.
- Find Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale.
- Change all three from 1x to 0.5x.
🔥 The pro-tip: Restrict background processes
If your phone is still lagging after the animation hack, your RAM is likely being eaten alive by zombie background apps.
Stay inside the Developer Options menu and scroll all the way down to the “Apps” section. Tap on Background process limit. By default, it is set to “Standard limit.” If you have an older phone struggling to keep up, change this to At most 3 processes. This forces your phone to aggressively close unused apps, freeing up massive amounts of memory for the app you are currently using.
