We have all been there. You are deep in the middle of a focused work session, a workout, or a family dinner, and your phone starts vibrating aggressively. You pick it up, see a local-looking number, answer it, and hear a three-second delay before an automated voice starts rambling about your car’s extended warranty.
Spam call networks use sophisticated “neighbor spoofing” to make their numbers look exactly like a local resident or business. Manually blocking these numbers after the fact is a losing battle. Instead, you need to prevent them from ringing in the first place.
The fix for iPhone users
Apple recently reorganized the iPhone’s system menus, moving native app configurations into their own dedicated space. To activate the system-wide firewall:
- Open the primary Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on the Apps section.
- Find and select the Phone app.
- Tap on Screen Unknown Callers.
- Select Silence.
The fix for Android users (by manufacturer)
Because Android is open-source, the exact location of this setting depends on the company that made your phone. Here is how to find it on the most popular devices:
- Google Pixel/stock Android: Open the Phone app. Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner and select Settings. Tap Blocked numbers and toggle Unknown to ON.
- Samsung (One UI): Open the Phone app. Tap the three dots and hit Settings. Go to Block numbers and toggle Block calls from unknown numbers to ON.
- Xiaomi/Poco/Redmi (MIUI & HyperOS): Xiaomi handles this through a dedicated security filter. Open the Phone app, tap the gear icon (Settings) in the top right. Tap Blocklist, then Call blocklist, and finally toggle Block calls from strangers to ON.
What happens to important calls?
A common concern is missing a crucial call from a delivery driver or a doctor’s office. Rest assured: this feature does not block or delete the call. If an unlisted number dials you, your phone will simply not ring or vibrate. The call is silently pushed to your Recents list, and the caller is immediately sent to voicemail. If it is a real person, they will leave a message. If it is a robocall bot, it will hang up.
